Its heart beats about twenty-five times a minute where the fly's\nwings blur past counting; it lives for decades where the fly lives for\ndays; and if you could ask it, the elephant would tell you that a summer\nafternoon is a short thing, while for the fly the same afternoon is a\nlong and eventful life. No physicist is needed to know this. A farmer\nknows it. A child who has watched both knows it. It is one of the oldest\nand least controversial facts about the living world: <strong>the bigger the\ncreature, the slower its clock.</strong></p>\n<p>This article is about what happens when you refuse to stop there. When you\ntake that ordinary observation — the elephant and the fly — and follow it\npatiently in both directions, past the fly to the mite and the cell and\nthe atom, past the elephant to the whale and the mountain and the planet\nand the star, and ask whether the rule keeps holding all the way up and\nall the way down. It is the claim of the Raëlian canon that it does; that\nthe rule has no natural stopping point in either direction; and that a\nuniverse in which it holds without end looks nothing like the one modern\ncosmology describes and a great deal like something older, stranger, and —\nthis Explainer will argue — more defensible than its reputation suggests.\nThe proper modern name for that something is <strong>fractal cosmology</strong>. The\ncanon has its own name for the clock rule at the heart of it, which the\nWheel of Heaven project calls the \n<a class=\"wikilink\" href=\"/wiki/mass-effect/\">Mass\nEffect</a>\n. And the whole picture rests on a single word that Yahweh\nused twice, in two different places, to describe the shape of reality:\n<em>infinite</em> — \n<a class=\"wikilink\" href=\"/wiki/infinity/\">infinite</a>\n in space,\ninfinite in time, and infinite in the ladder of scales that runs through\nboth.</p>\n<h2 id=\"What_Yahweh_said,_and_where_he_said_it\">What Yahweh said, and where he said it</h2>\n<p>The picture arrives in two installments, and the setting of each matters.</p>\n<p>The first comes at the end of the first message, delivered over six days\nin 1973 in the crater of a French volcano.<sup class=\"footnote\" data-footnote-id=\"1\">[1]</sup>\n Yahweh\nhas spent most of a week walking \n<a class=\"wikilink\" href=\"/wiki/rael/\">Raël</a>\n\nthrough the Hebrew Bible, re-reading its miracles as technology. Then, near\nthe close, he changes register entirely — from history to cosmology — and\nsays something that has no obvious connection to anything before it:</p>\n<blockquote class=\"library-quote\" data-source=\"&#x2F;library&#x2F;the-book-which-tells-the-truth&#x2F;#c5p57\">Progress continues, and our own research pursues itself with the aim of\nunderstanding and entering into relation with the great being of which we\nare all a part and of which we are the parasites of the atoms, these atoms\nbeing the planets and the stars. We have indeed been able to discover that\nin the infinitely small, intelligent living beings live on particles that\nare for them planets and suns, asking themselves the same questions as we\ndo. Man is a «disease» of the gigantic being of which the planets and the\nstars are atoms. And this being is surely itself also a parasite of other\natoms. In both directions, it is infinite.</blockquote>\n<p>Read it slowly, because every clause is load-bearing. The Elohim — the\nadvanced civilization Yahweh represents — are not, on their own account,\nthe top of anything. They are researchers trying to enter into relation\nwith a <em>\"great being of which we are all a part\"</em> — a being for whom the\nstars and planets are atoms. Downward, the same structure: inside the\nthings we call atoms, there are inhabited worlds, with their own suns,\ntheir own beings, their own questions — and, the passage implies, their own\nscientists wondering whether they are alone. Humanity is a <em>\"disease\"</em> not\nin the sense of something wrong but in the sense of something <em>small and\nalive on the surface of something vast</em> — a microbial film on a body too\nlarge to notice it. And the structure does not terminate. Up past the\ngigantic being are larger beings still; down past our atoms are smaller\nworlds still. <em>\"In both directions, it is infinite.\"</em></p>\n<p>The second installment comes two years later, and its setting is even more\npointed. In the second message, Yahweh takes Raël off the Earth to a\n<strong>base situated \"relatively near the earth\"</strong> — not the home world, not the\nPlanet of the Eternals, just an orbital way-station — and there, in a\nsection the books title <em>\"Neither God nor Soul,\"</em> he lays the cosmology out\nin full. He begins from a laboratory fact, that intelligent life has been\nfound and <em>proven</em> on the scale of the infinitely small, and builds upward:</p>\n<blockquote class=\"library-quote\" data-source=\"&#x2F;library&#x2F;extraterrestrials-took-me-to-their-planet&#x2F;#c2p31\">Starting from there we have discovered that the stars and the planets are\nthe atoms of a gigantic being, which itself certainly contemplates other\nstars with curiosity. It is also quite possible that the beings who live on\nthe infinitely small of the infinitely large being and its fellows have\nknown periods when they believed in an immaterial \"good god\". You must\nunderstand well that all is in all. At this moment in an atom of your arm,\nmillions of worlds are being born and others are dying, believing or not in\na god and a soul and while a millennium elapses, the gigantic being of\nwhich the sun is an atom has had only the time to take one step.</blockquote>\n<p>And then, in the very next breath, the sentence this whole article orbits —\nthe one place in the entire canon where the ontology is stated as a law of\nphysics rather than a picture:</p>\n<blockquote class=\"library-quote\" data-source=\"&#x2F;library&#x2F;extraterrestrials-took-me-to-their-planet&#x2F;#c2p32\">Time is in effect inversely proportional to the mass or rather to the level\nof the form of life. But all in the universe is living and is in harmony\nwith the infinitely large and the infinitely small. The earth is living,\nlike all the planets, and, for the little mould that is humanity, it is\ndifficult for you to realize it because of the time lag due to the enormous\ndifference of mass which prevents you from capturing its palpitations.</blockquote>\n<p>There it is. <em>Time is inversely proportional to the mass, or rather to the\nlevel of the form of life.</em> The elephant and the fly, promoted to a\ncosmological principle and extended without limit in both directions. The\nthousand-year step of the gigantic being is the same fact as the fly's long\nafternoon, read at the top of the ladder instead of near the middle. And\nthe reason we cannot feel the Earth living beneath us is not that it is\ndead but that its clock is too slow for ours to register — the \"time lag due\nto the enormous difference of mass.\"</p>\n<p>From this single law Yahweh derives, in the paragraphs that follow, a whole\ntheology of subtraction. If the universe is infinite it <em>\"cannot have a\ncentre,\"</em> so there is no privileged place for a heaven or a throne\n(<a class=\"libref\" href=\"&#x2F;library&#x2F;extraterrestrials-took-me-to-their-planet&#x2F;#c2p33\">ETTMTTP 2:33</a>\n).\nIf matter is eternal — <em>\"nothing is lost, nothing is created, all is\ntransformed\"</em> — then asking what there was \"at the beginning\" is a category\nerror, <em>\"a stupid question which proves that the person who poses this\nquestion has not taken consciousness of the infinite which exists in time\nas in space\"</em>\n(<a class=\"libref\" href=\"&#x2F;library&#x2F;extraterrestrials-took-me-to-their-planet&#x2F;#c2p34\">ETTMTTP 2:34</a>\n).\nAnd the difficulty most people have in swallowing any of this is itself\ndiagnosed: the <em>\"finite\" human brain</em> wants a universe <em>\"well defined, well\ndelimited, bounded in a way in the image of his brain,\"</em> and recoils from an\ninfinity that makes man <em>\"not something exceptional, but some being situated\nat some period in some place of the infinite universe\"</em>\n(<a class=\"libref\" href=\"&#x2F;library&#x2F;extraterrestrials-took-me-to-their-planet&#x2F;#c2p36\">ETTMTTP 2:36</a>\n).\nYahweh even records, with evident pleasure, an image Raël had used in a\nlecture — of people who deny life on other worlds as <em>frogs at the bottom\nof their pond wondering whether there is life in the other ponds.</em></p>\n<p>All of it — the centerless space, the beginningless time, the nested\nliving scales — Yahweh compresses into a single glyph, the\n\n<a class=\"wikilink\" href=\"/wiki/raelian-symbol-of-infinity/\">emblem</a>\n he says was\nengraved on the craft:</p>\n<blockquote class=\"library-quote\" data-source=\"&#x2F;library&#x2F;the-book-which-tells-the-truth&#x2F;#c3p288\">The emblem you see engraved on this craft and on my suit represents the\ntruth: it is also the emblem of the Jewish people: the Star of David, which\nmeans «As it is above, so it is below», and at its center the «swastika»,\nwhich means that everything is cyclical, the high becoming low and the low\nbecoming high. The origins and the destiny of the creators and of men are\nalike and linked.</blockquote>\n<p>Two interlocked triangles for the spatial claim — <em>as above, so below</em>, the\nsame structure repeating up and down the scales — and a rotating cross for\nthe temporal one: everything cyclic, nothing beginning, nothing ending,\n<em>\"the high becoming low and the low becoming high.\"</em> Yahweh notes that the\npairing is old, that the two symbols appear together in <em>\"ancient writings\nlike the Bardo Thödol\"</em><sup class=\"footnote\" data-footnote-id=\"11\">[11]</sup>\n and others. He is claiming,\nin other words, that this is not a new cosmology at all. It is a very old\none, remembered in fragments, and he is returning the key.</p>\n<p>The rest of this Explainer is an attempt to see whether the key fits.</p>\n<h2 id=\"The_virtue_of_an_ordinary_law\">The virtue of an ordinary law</h2>\n<p>Before formalizing anything, it is worth being clear about what <em>kind</em> of\nclaim the Mass Effect is, because its epistemic character is its greatest\nstrength and is almost always missed.</p>\n<p>There are two ways to arrive at a law of nature. The first is analytic: you\nfind a regularity, write it as an equation, and then push the equation to\nits logical extremes to see what it predicts — division by zero yielding a\nsingularity, an exponential run to infinity, a symmetry extrapolated past\nevery regime in which it was ever tested. This is how modern theoretical\nphysics mostly proceeds, and it is spectacularly powerful. It is also, as a\nmethod, quietly dangerous: it treats the mathematics as more real than the\nobservations that seeded it, and it has a habit of mistaking the smoke of an\nover-extended formula for the fire of a discovery. When general relativity's\nequations return an infinite density at the center of a black hole, or when\nrunning the expansion backward returns an infinitely hot point, the honest\ndescription is that <em>the equation has broken</em>, not that nature contains an\nactual infinity of temperature. The analytic method has no built-in brake.\nIt will happily compute the first ten-thousandth of a second after a\nbeginning it has no independent reason to believe in.</p>\n<p>The second way is the way of thermodynamics. No one derived the second law\nby extrapolating an equation past its evidence. It was read off the world:\nheat flows from hot to cold, engines waste some fraction of their fuel, the\nscrambled egg does not unscramble. A farmer understands entropy without\nbeing able to spell it — understands that the barn falls down and never\nbuilds itself up, that effort leaks away, that you cannot get something for\nnothing. The formalism came <em>after</em>, as bookkeeping for a truth already in\nhand. Such laws are safe in a way the analytic ones are not, because they\nare anchored to something ordinary and refuse to wander far from it.</p>\n<p><strong>The Mass Effect is a law of the second kind.</strong> Its ground is not an\nequation but an observation a child can make: the big thing is slow, the\nsmall thing is fast. Yahweh states it exactly this way — <em>\"or rather to the\nlevel of the form of life\"</em> — pulling the claim back from clean kinematic\nmass toward the messier, more empirical notion of <em>how large and how\norganized a living thing is</em>. The formula, when we write one, will be\nbookkeeping. And the extrapolation to the stars and the atoms is not the\nreckless kind — not an equation shoved past its evidence — but the\npatient kind, the extension of a rule that has held at every scale we have\nactually been able to check. That is a crucial distinction, and the rest of\nthe argument depends on it. We are not extrapolating a formula. We are\nfollowing an observation.</p>\n<p>So let us see how far the observation has, in fact, already been checked.</p>\n<h2 id=\"The_one_sentence,_formalized\">The one sentence, formalized</h2>\n<p>Take Yahweh's sentence at face value and try to write it down. <em>\"Time is\ninversely proportional to the mass.\"</em> The most literal reading is that the\nrate <em>r</em> at which a being experiences subjective time, per unit of external\ntime, falls as its mass <em>M</em> rises:</p>\n<p>$$\nr \\propto \\frac{1}{M}\n$$</p>\n<p>or, equivalently, the amount of external time <em>T</em> folded into one of the\nbeing's own subjective moments <em>grows</em> with its mass:</p>\n<p>$$\nT \\propto M\n$$</p>\n<p>The two are reciprocals; the canon uses the second when it says\na human millennium is one step for the star-atom being, and the first when\nit says the fly-scaled worlds inside your arm are born and die <em>\"while a\nmillennium elapses.\"</em> The \n<a class=\"wikilink\" href=\"/wiki/mass-effect/\">Mass Effect</a>\n\nwiki entry sets both formulations out carefully, and this article will not\nrepeat that labor. What it will do is press on the word <em>\"proportional\"</em> —\nbecause it is almost certainly not exactly true, and the way in which it is\nwrong is the most interesting thing about it.</p>\n<p>Strict inverse proportionality, \\(r \\propto 1/M\\), is a guess at the <em>form</em>\nof the law. Biology already knows the real form, and it is close but not\nidentical. Across the whole living world, the study of how a creature's\ntraits scale with its size — <strong>allometry</strong><sup class=\"footnote\" data-footnote-id=\"2\">[2]</sup>\n — finds that\ntemporal quantities scale with body mass not as \\(M^{-1}\\) but as simple\n<strong>quarter-powers</strong>:</p>\n<ul>\n<li>metabolic rate — the pace at which a body burns through the world —\nscales as \\(M^{3/4}\\) (Kleiber's law, 1932), so metabolic rate <em>per unit\nmass</em> falls as \\(M^{-1/4}\\);</li>\n<li>heart rate falls as \\(M^{-1/4}\\) (the elephant at ~25 beats a minute, the\nmouse at ~600);</li>\n<li>lifespan rises as \\(M^{1/4}\\) (the elephant's decades, the mouse's two or\nthree years).</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Put the last two together and something quietly astonishing drops out: the\nnumber of heartbeats in a life — rate multiplied by span,\n\\(M^{-1/4} \\times M^{1/4} = M^{0}\\) — is <em>roughly constant</em>, about a billion,\nfrom shrew to whale. Measured\nin its own heartbeats rather than in our seconds, every mammal lives about\nthe same length of life. The elephant is not granted more time than the\nmouse. It is granted the <em>same</em> time, run slower. That is the Mass Effect,\nstated in the currency biology actually uses, and it is not Raëlian\nspeculation — it is Max Kleiber and a century of confirmations.</p>\n<p>The quarter-powers even come with a mechanism, and the mechanism is the\nhinge of this whole article. In 1997 Geoffrey West, James Brown, and Brian\nEnquist derived Kleiber's exponent from first principles by modeling the\nbody's supply network — the branching vascular tree that feeds every cell —\nas a <strong>space-filling fractal</strong>. The quarter, rather than the third one would\nnaïvely expect from volume, is the signature of a fractal distribution\nnetwork optimized across scales. In other words: <em>the reason biological time\nscales with size is that life is plumbed fractally.</em> The temporal law and\nthe fractal geometry are not two facts. They are one fact seen twice.</p>\n<p>And the effect is not merely metabolic bookkeeping; it reaches perception\nitself. Small animals do not just live fast — they <em>see</em> fast. The critical\nflicker fusion frequency<sup class=\"footnote\" data-footnote-id=\"3\">[3]</sup>\n, the frame rate of the visual\nsystem, scales down with body size exactly as the Mass Effect would demand\n(Healy et al., 2013). A fly experiences our lunging hand in something like\nslow motion because, to the fly, our second genuinely contains more moments.\nThis is the elephant and the fly upgraded from folk wisdom to instrument\nreading. <em>\"For the little mould that is humanity, it is difficult for you to\nrealize it because of the time lag.\"</em> The time lag is measurable. It has\nunits.</p>\n<p>Now push up the scale, past biology, into physics — and the law does not\ndisappear; it changes uniform. General relativity says that mass slows time:\na clock deep in a gravitational well ticks slower than one higher\nup.<sup class=\"footnote\" data-footnote-id=\"4\">[4]</sup>\n This is not analogy; it is the confirmed content\nof Einstein's 1915 field equations, checked from the Pound–Rebka tower in\n1960 to a thirty-three-centimetre height difference in 2010, and corrected\nfor every day in the GPS satellites over your head. More mass, slower time.\nThe canon's sentence, restricted to the regime physicists have tested, is\n<em>general relativity's own statement</em>. Where the Mass Effect goes beyond the\nmainstream is not in the direction of the claim but in its reach: it asserts\nthat the same qualitative relation — bigger is slower — governs not just\ngravitational clocks and metabolic clocks but the <em>subjective</em> clocks of\nbeings at every scale, continuously, without a top or a bottom.</p>\n<p>So the formalization comes to this. The exact functional form is a research\nquestion, not a settled equation — inverse-first-power in the canon's\ncompressed phrasing, quarter-powers in the biology, the full relativistic\nmetric in the gravitational regime, and very possibly something else again\nat scales we cannot yet probe. The project does not pretend to have the\nfinal coefficient. What it has is something rarer and sturdier: a\nqualitative law, anchored in an ordinary observation, confirmed\nindependently in metabolism, in heart rates, in lifespans, in perception,\nand in gravitation, every one of which says the same thing in a different\ndialect. <em>Bigger is slower.</em> The canon's only heresy is to refuse to stop\nsaying it.</p>\n<h2 id=\"The_name_for_a_universe_like_this\">The name for a universe like this</h2>\n<p>A universe in which the same structure — inhabited worlds, atoms that are\nstars, a clock that scales with size — repeats up and down without end has a\nprecise modern name, and it is not a Raëlian coinage. It is <strong>fractal</strong>.</p>\n<p>Benoît Mandelbrot gave the mathematics its founding statement in <em>The\nFractal Geometry of Nature</em> (1982), and its two defining properties are\nexactly the two properties of Yahweh's cosmos. The first is\n<strong>self-similarity</strong>: the parts resemble the whole across a range of\nmagnifications, so that a coastline looks equally rough from orbit and from\na stepladder, a fern's frond repeats the whole fern, a branching lung\nrepeats itself down to the alveoli. The second is that a fractal has\n<strong>structure at every scale</strong><sup class=\"footnote\" data-footnote-id=\"6\">[6]</sup>\n — it never resolves into\nfeatureless smoothness the way a classical curve does when you zoom in far\nenough. <em>\"All is in all,\"</em> Yahweh says; <em>\"as it is above, so it is below.\"</em>\nThat is self-similarity, stated as metaphysics rather than as geometry. The\nMandelbrot set and the Elohim's emblem are, at the level of structure, the\nsame claim.</p>\n<p>The \n<a class=\"wikilink\" href=\"/wiki/fractal-cosmology/\">Fractal Cosmology</a>\n wiki entry\ndevelops the full case; here the point is narrower and sharper. <strong>The\nRaëlian ontology is not a lonely mystical assertion.</strong> Fractal cosmology is\na live — if minority — position in professional physics, and it has been for\nforty years. The story runs on three tracks, and honesty requires all three.</p>\n<p>The first track is <em>observational</em>, and it is the one where the canon is\nmost exposed to falsification. Beginning in 1987, Luciano Pietronero and his\ncollaborators argued from galaxy-survey data that the distribution of matter\nin the universe is fractal — that galaxies cluster within clusters within\nsuperclusters in a self-similar hierarchy, with a measurable non-integer\ndimension (around 2 rather than 3), rather than smoothing out into the\nuniform paste that standard cosmology's <strong>cosmological\nprinciple</strong><sup class=\"footnote\" data-footnote-id=\"8\">[8]</sup>\n requires. As late as 2005, Joyce, Sylos\nLabini, and Pietronero were still finding fractal correlations in Sloan\nDigital Sky Survey data out to large scales. <strong>This is the front line, and\nintellectual honesty demands reporting that the mainstream believes the\ncanon loses here.</strong> The weight of the evidence — Hogg and colleagues in\n2005, the WiggleZ survey's explicit \"transition to large-scale cosmic\nhomogeneity\" in 2012, Tegmark's power-spectrum analyses — is that the matter\ndistribution <em>is</em> fractal on the scales of galaxies and clusters but\n<em>transitions to homogeneity</em> somewhere around 250–370 million light-years,\nabove which the universe looks smooth after all. The consensus reading is\nthat the cosmos is fractal in the middle and uniform at the top: a shag rug,\nnot an infinite tapestry. A fractal cosmologist answers that the \"homogeneity\nscale\" keeps receding as surveys deepen, and that assuming homogeneity to\nanalyze data cannot then cleanly prove it; but this is a defensive position,\nand the article will not pretend otherwise. If the canon's infinite fractal\nis ever decisively killed, it will be killed here.</p>\n<p>The second track is <em>theoretical</em>, and here the canon has unexpected\ncompany. The mainstream's own best models keep generating fractal, eternal,\ncenterless universes <em>by accident</em>, as unwanted consequences of equations\nbuilt for other purposes. Andrei Linde's <strong>eternal\ninflation</strong><sup class=\"footnote\" data-footnote-id=\"9\">[9]</sup>\n (1986) — now a standard part of the\ninflationary paradigm, elaborated by Alan Guth and others — produces an\nunbounded, self-reproducing, self-similar array of pocket universes budding\noff one another forever: a fractal multiverse with no first bubble and no\nlast. Linde's own title calls it a <em>\"self-reproducing chaotic\"</em> universe.\nThe physicists did not want infinity; the mathematics handed it to them.</p>\n<p>The third track is the deepest and the most surprising: at the smallest\nscales, several independent quantum-gravity programs find that spacetime\nitself is fractal. In causal dynamical triangulations (Ambjørn, Jurkiewicz,\nLoll, 2005) the effective <strong>dimension of spacetime runs with\nscale</strong><sup class=\"footnote\" data-footnote-id=\"7\">[7]</sup>\n, falling from four at everyday distances toward\ntwo at the Planck scale. Asymptotic-safety gravity (Lauscher and Reuter)\nfinds the same dimensional reduction by a different route. And in 2025\nTorsten Asselmeyer-Maluga's <em>The Wild Fractal Nature of Spacetime</em> derives it\nyet again from the exotic differential structures unique to four dimensions,\nstating flatly that <em>\"the fractal nature of the spacetime\"</em> is what produces\nquantum fluctuation, and that <em>\"wild embeddings represent the space at every\nscale in one structure.\"</em> Three programs, three formalisms, one conclusion:\nspacetime is not the smooth continuum of the textbooks all the way down. It\nhas structure at every scale. It is a fractal.</p>\n<p>None of this <em>proves</em> the Raëlian cosmos. What it establishes is more modest\nand more useful: the canon's ontology — infinite, self-similar, centerless,\nbeginningless, with structure at every scale — is not a category error or a\nmystical indulgence. It is a recognizable member of a family of cosmologies\nthat serious physics has been circling, from three unrelated directions, for\ndecades. The canon's distinctive move is only to insist that the fractal\nruns <em>all the way</em> in both directions, and — the part no equation contains —\nthat it is <em>inhabited</em>.</p>\n<h2 id=\"Jurassic_Park,_or_the_fractal_in_the_popular_imagination\">Jurassic Park, or the fractal in the popular imagination</h2>\n<p>There is a reason this cluster of ideas — scaling, self-similarity, the\nlimits of prediction — surfaced in the culture exactly when it did, and the\nWheel of Heaven \n<a class=\"wikilink\" href=\"/wiki/cosmic-chain/\">timeline</a>\n has already\nnamed the place it surfaced: <em>Jurassic Park</em>. The timeline invokes\nCrichton's novel for its ethics — scientists who <em>\"were so preoccupied with\nwhether they could that they didn't stop to think if they should.\"</em> But the\nbook carries a second cargo that bears directly on this article, and it is\nworth unpacking, because it shows the same ontology leaking into the modern\nimagination through the side door of fiction.</p>\n<p>Michael Crichton did not organize <em>Jurassic Park</em> into chapters. He\norganized it into <strong>iterations</strong>, and printed a fractal — successive\nmagnifications of the branching <em>dragon curve</em> — on the part-title pages, the\ncurve growing more elaborate as the disaster compounds. He had been reading,\nin the late 1980s, the popular literature of chaos theory: James Gleick's\n<em>Chaos: Making a New Science</em> (1987) and Ivar Ekeland's <em>Mathematics and the\nUnexpected</em> (1988), both credited at the back of the novel. From them he took\nEdward Lorenz's discovery that deterministic systems can be radically\nunpredictable — the \"butterfly effect,\" born in a 1963 paper about weather\nthat would not repeat — and Mandelbrot's fractals, and Mitchell Feigenbaum's\nuniversal constants governing the passage from order into chaos. He gave the\nwhole apparatus a voice in the mathematician Ian Malcolm, whose running\ncommentary is a chaos-theory chorus: complex systems built to be controlled\nwill escape control, because their sensitivity to detail runs down through\nevery scale without bottoming out.</p>\n<p>The connection to the canon is not the dinosaurs. It is the <em>geometry of\nthe intuition.</em> Chaos theory and fractal geometry are the same discovery\nmade in two provinces — time and space. A chaotic system is one whose\nbehavior is self-similar across scales of time (the same unpredictability at\nevery magnification of the clock); a fractal is a form self-similar across\nscales of space. Crichton's instinct, dramatized as a cautionary tale, was\nthat reality has structure <em>all the way down</em>, that there is no scale small\nenough to be safely ignored, and that a civilization which assumes otherwise\n— which treats its island, or its planet, as a closed and controllable box —\nhas misread the depth of the world it is standing on. That is a fractal\nintuition wearing a monster movie. And it is, structurally, the intuition\nYahweh states without the monsters: <em>all is in all</em>; the small scale is not\nnegligible; there are worlds in the atoms of your arm. The 1990s met this\nidea as entertainment because the science had just made it speakable. The\ncanon claims it was always true, and had been spoken before.</p>\n<h2 id=\"The_riskier_edges_of_the_model\">The riskier edges of the model</h2>\n<p>Everything to this point stays close to confirmed ground: the elephant and\nthe fly, the quarter-power laws, gravitational time dilation, the fractal\nmathematics, the professional debates. What follows leaves that ground.\nThis section is <strong>speculative</strong> in the exact sense the project uses the word\n— interpretive synthesis that runs ahead of any single source, offered as a\nworking hypothesis and labeled as one, precisely so the reader can weigh it\ndifferently from what came before. The model, taken seriously, suggests\nthree conjectures that mainstream physics does not make, and it would be\ndishonest to develop the ontology and then flinch from where it points.</p>\n<p><strong>First: forces as the leakage between scales.</strong> If the same physics runs at\nevery level of the hierarchy, then what registers as a fundamental force at\nour scale might be the shadow of an ordinary process at another. The canon\nalready contains the seed of this. In the first message Yahweh mentions that\nthe Elohim communicate with <em>\"waves that your technique cannot perceive...\nseven times faster than radioelectric waves\"</em>\n(<a class=\"libref\" href=\"&#x2F;library&#x2F;the-book-which-tells-the-truth&#x2F;#c5p57\">TBWTT 5:57</a>\n)\n— waves outside our instruments not because they are magical but because our\ndetectors are tuned to our scale. Extend the thought. Suppose the faint,\nalmost undetectable ripples we call gravitational waves are not a phenomenon\nnative to our level at all, but something like the <em>weak interaction of a\nworld one storey up</em> — a short-range process in the gigantic being's physics,\nreaching us so attenuated by the scale gap that we can barely register it.\nAnd symmetrically, that what we experience as the weak or strong nuclear\nforces — powerful, absurdly short-ranged, confined to the sub-atomic — are\nthe <em>gravitation of the worlds inside our atoms</em>, felt only at their scale.\nOn this reading the four \"fundamental forces\" of the Standard Model are not\nfour separate ingredients of one level of reality but <em>the same few\nprocesses glimpsed across a few rungs of the ladder</em>, each looking\nfundamental to whoever is standing on the rung where it dominates. The\nmainstream has spent fifty years and enormous ingenuity trying to unify the\nforces at a single scale. The fractal ontology suggests the reason unification\nhas stalled: the forces were never all at one scale to begin with.</p>\n<p><strong>Second: why the night sky is black.</strong> Olbers's paradox<sup class=\"footnote\" data-footnote-id=\"5\">[5]</sup>\n\nis a genuine and underappreciated problem — in an infinite, eternal, roughly\nuniform universe of stars, every sightline should end on a star and the sky\nshould blaze. Standard cosmology resolves it with finite age and redshift:\nthe universe is young enough, and distant light stretched enough, that most\nof the sky's stars are invisible or absent. But a fractal, <em>hierarchical</em>\ndistribution resolves it too, and did so historically — this was one of\nOlbers's paradox's classic escapes long before the Big Bang: if matter is\nclustered fractally with dimension less than two, the sky's brightness from\ndistant matter converges instead of diverging, and darkness returns without\nany need for a beginning. The Mass Effect adds a further, frankly speculative\npossibility that the canon's own physics invites: if the light of the truly\ndistant, larger-scale structures travels by processes <em>\"your technique cannot\nperceive\"</em> — waves faster than light-speed as we measure it, or carried in a\nmedium whose reach and losses we do not know — then those structures could be\nthere, luminous, and simply <em>not arrive</em>, in a form our eyes count as light.\nThe black sky, on this reading, is not evidence of a young or empty universe.\nIt is evidence of the scale gap — the same gap that keeps us from feeling the\nEarth's palpitations.</p>\n<p><strong>Third: a universe that breathes rather than bangs.</strong> The Mass Effect's\nsharpest collision with mainstream cosmology is over the Big Bang, and the\ncanon is unambiguous: there was none — <em>\"there is neither beginning nor end\nto matter.\"</em> The redshift that the standard model reads as universal\nexpansion from a hot origin need not mean that at all. In a fractal cosmos\nwith the Mass Effect running, our entire observable universe is a <em>\"particle\nof an atom of a molecule\"</em> in the body of a vastly larger, vastly slower\nbeing (<a class=\"libref\" href=\"&#x2F;library&#x2F;extraterrestrials-took-me-to-their-planet&#x2F;#c3p194\">ETTMTTP 3:194</a>\n).\nWhat we clock, over the whole span of human astronomy, as billions of years\nof cosmic expansion could be a single slow event at <em>that</em> scale — one phase\nof a breath, a dilation of the higher being's lungs, or a contraction read\ninside-out. A local, temporary expansion; a higher-order palpitation we are\ntoo small and too fast to recognize as rhythmic. On this picture the \"red\nshift could indicate some temporary expansion, which may simply be a short\ncontraction of a higher-order effect\" — the cosmos not exploding once and\ncooling forever, but <em>breathing</em>, and us living out the whole of recorded\nscience inside a fraction of one inhalation. The swastika at the center of\nthe emblem — <em>\"everything is cyclical, the high becoming low and the low\nbecoming high\"</em> — is exactly this claim, drawn as a symbol.</p>\n<p>These three conjectures are not established. They may be wrong. They are set\ndown here because a model earns its keep by generating them — by saying\nsomething the reigning picture does not, something in principle checkable —\nand because their common root is a single refusal: the refusal to treat our\nscale, our instruments, and our slice of time as the measure of what exists.</p>\n<h2 id=\"The_cross-examination\">The cross-examination</h2>\n<p>A model this sweeping deserves a hostile witness, and the best available is\none this project respects: <strong>David Berlinski</strong>, whose <em>The Devil's Delusion</em>\n(2009) is the most literate contrarian assault on the overreach of modern\nscientific cosmology in print. Berlinski is not a believer; he is a skeptic\nof <em>pretension</em>, and he would turn that skepticism on the canon as readily\nas on the Standard Model. His cross-examination would run in two directions\nat once, and both are worth hearing.</p>\n<p>Against the <em>mainstream</em> — and here he is the canon's unexpected ally —\nBerlinski is withering. He calls quantum cosmology <em>\"the most speculative of\ninquiries and... among the least successful,\"</em> notes that <em>\"the wave function\nof the universe cannot be seen, measured, assessed, or tested,\"</em> and observes\nthat physicists resent religion mainly for <em>\"precisely the same attempt to\nreach by speculation what cannot be grasped in any other way.\"</em> He records,\nwith relish, that the Big Bang struck its own discoverers as suspiciously\ntheological — that it <em>\"strikes an uncomfortably theistic note,\"</em> that Fred\nHoyle coined the name in order to dismiss the thing, that Hawking himself\nwrote <em>\"so long as the universe had a beginning, we could suppose it had a\ncreator\"</em> — <em>\"God forbid!\"</em> This is precisely the canon's complaint, from an\natheist's mouth: that mainstream cosmology smuggled a creation event into\nphysics and has been trying to speculate its way back out ever since, through\nmultiverses and wave-functions and Landscapes that <em>\"no part of [the\nevidence] need be produced.\"</em> On the question of whether the Big Bang is\nsecure bedrock or a soft spot dressed as bedrock, Berlinski and Yahweh agree.</p>\n<p>But Berlinski would not spare the canon, and the article must not let it off.\nHe would say: <em>you have done the very thing you accuse them of.</em> You have\ntaken one sentence from a book — <em>\"time is inversely proportional to the\nmass\"</em> — and inflated it into a theory of forces, a resolution of Olbers's\nparadox, and a breathing cosmos, none of which you can produce evidence for\non demand. Your fractal universe faces a homogeneity scale you admit the\ndata supports. Your cross-scale forces are a picture, not a calculation. Your\nbreathing cosmos is untestable in exactly the way you mocked the wave\nfunction of the universe for being. You have built, he would say, your own\n<em>\"put-up job.\"</em></p>\n<p>The honest reply is not a rebuttal but a distinction, and it is the one this\narticle opened with. The canon's charge against mainstream cosmology is not\nthat it speculates — everyone facing the infinite must — but that it\nspeculates <em>analytically</em>, by driving equations past their evidence into\nregimes (the first instant, the singularity, the wave function of\neverything) that no observation constrains, and then mistaking the output for\na finding. The Mass Effect speculates the other way: it starts from something\na farmer knows, extends it by continuity rather than by extrapolation, and\narrives at conjectures that, however far-reaching, remain tethered to the\nelephant and the fly. Whether that tether holds all the way to the\ngravitational-wave detector and the redshift survey is exactly the open\nquestion — and the project's obligation, which it has tried to meet here, is\nto mark plainly where the confirmed law ends and the conjecture begins.\nBerlinski's real lesson is not that one should never speculate about the\ninfinite. It is that one should never <em>hide</em> that one is doing so. On that\nstandard, the fractal cosmology asks only to be judged by the same rule it\nasks of everyone else.</p>\n<h2 id=\"What_the_infinite_is_for\">What the infinite is for</h2>\n<p>It would be a mistake to leave this as cosmology alone, because in the canon\nit never is. The reason Yahweh lays out an infinite fractal universe on a\nbase near the Earth is not to settle a question in physics. It is to change\nhow a person stands in the world, and the ontology is built to deliver a\nspecific ethical and emotional result.</p>\n<p>Strip a human being of the center of the universe and two things happen at\nonce. The first is a demotion, and the canon does not soften it: man is <em>\"not\nsomething exceptional, but some being situated at some period in some place\nof the infinite universe,\"</em> a <em>\"disease\"</em> on a body too vast to feel him, a\nmould on a living Earth. In a centerless, beginningless, endless cosmos\nnothing we do echoes cosmically; the infinite is, as the later books put it,\n<em>\"infinitely indifferent\"</em> to our decisions. This is the vertigo the <em>finite\nbrain</em> recoils from — the frog refusing to believe in the other ponds.</p>\n<p>But the second thing is a liberation, and the canon builds a practice around\nit. The same demotion that makes us cosmically small frees us from the\ncrushing weight of cosmic significance, and returns meaning to the scales\nwhere we actually live. Yahweh gives Raël the \n<a class=\"wikilink\" href=\"/wiki/four-levels/\">Four\nLevels</a>\n to hold at once — <em>\"in relation to the infinite; in relation\nto the Elohim our fathers, our creators; then in relation to human society;\nfinally in relation to the individual\"</em>\n(<a class=\"libref\" href=\"&#x2F;library&#x2F;extraterrestrials-took-me-to-their-planet&#x2F;#c3p5\">ETTMTTP 3:5</a>\n)\n— and a meditation that runs the whole ladder deliberately: outward until the\ncity is a point, the continent a point, the galaxy a point, our universe a\nparticle in some larger being's arm; then inward through the body, the cells,\nthe molecules, the atoms <em>\"that turn like suns around the center of a\ngalaxy,\"</em> down to the particles <em>\"on which live beings who wonder whether\nthere is life on the other planets\"</em>\n(<a class=\"libref\" href=\"&#x2F;library&#x2F;extraterrestrials-took-me-to-their-planet&#x2F;#c3p195\">ETTMTTP 3:195</a>\n).\nThe exercise is the ontology turned into a spiritual instrument. To sit at\nthe exact middle of the infinite ladder and feel it extend without end in\nboth directions is, in the canon's phrase, to become <em>\"a part of the infinite,\nthat is to say much and little\"</em> at the same moment.</p>\n<p><em>Much and little.</em> That is the whole ethic in three words, and it is only\navailable in a fractal cosmos. In a universe with a center you are either at\nit or exiled from it — either everything or nothing. Only in a universe that\nis infinite in both directions can a person be, without contradiction, an\nentire world to the beings in their atoms and a passing mould to the being in\nwhose atoms they live; a creator and a creation; slow to the fly and fast to\nthe star. The old traditions kept circling this — Pascal's man suspended\nbetween the two infinities, <em>\"a nothing in regard to the infinite, an all in\nregard to nothing\"</em>; the Hermetic <em>as above, so below</em><sup class=\"footnote\" data-footnote-id=\"10\">[10]</sup>\n;\nGiordano Bruno burned in 1600 partly for an infinite universe of innumerable\nworlds; Kant's honest confession that reason can prove the world both bounded\nand unbounded and cannot choose. The canon's claim is that these were not\nindependent philosophical exercises but fragments of one remembered picture,\nthe same picture engraved on the emblem, and that the fragment finally\nreturned to Raël in a French crater is the instruction for reassembling them.</p>\n<h2 id=\"The_elephant_and_the_fly,_again\">The elephant and the fly, again</h2>\n<p>Return to where this began. An elephant is slower than a fly. It is the most\nordinary fact in the world, and a farmer has always known it. The wager of\nthe Raëlian canon — and of this Explainer's reading of it — is that this\nordinary fact is not a curiosity of biology but a crack in the floor of\nreality, and that if you have the nerve to follow it down through the crack,\npast the fly to the cell to the atom to the inhabited worlds Yahweh says are\ninside your arm, and up through the ceiling, past the elephant to the planet\nto the star to the gigantic being whose single step is our millennium, you\ndo not arrive anywhere. You keep going. In both directions, it is infinite.</p>\n<p>The mainstream may yet close the crack. The homogeneity scale may hold; the\ngalaxies may smooth out; the breathing cosmos may stay untestable and the\ncross-scale forces may never yield a calculation. The project has marked\nthose risks honestly and will not pretend they are small. But it is worth\nnoticing what kind of cosmology this is, and what kind it is not. It is not\nan equation driven off a cliff into a singularity no one can see. It is an\nobservation — the plainest one there is — carried patiently to its logical\nend and refused permission to stop. Whatever else is true of it, it was built\nthe way the second law of thermodynamics was built: from something a farmer\nalready trusts, followed without flinching to where it leads. The\ndestination is strange. The first step is not.
