The hands that wield the planchette must also be censed with incense to drive off impurity, the heart stilled for a while; then the spirit must be set to advance and go forth out of the body to attend and receive instruction. One must have a True-Spirit that is refined and advanced for the marvel and mystery to work; one must keep a lifelong vegetarian diet for the soul to advance; one must train one's nature toward the utmost of the Saints, Immortals, and Buddhas in order to support the planchette (phò cơ) and teach the Way to all living beings. Whoever supports the planchette and holds the pen is like a General of the Master, set to transmit the Way to the world. My children, do not think the work of pen and planchette an ordinary matter.
