The Greek astronomer <strong>Hipparchus of Rhodes</strong>, working around 129 BCE, compared his own measurements of the star Spica against those of Timocharis a century and a half earlier, found the star had shifted about two degrees relative to the equinox, and read this correctly as a motion of the equinox rather than of the stars. Cornford)</p>\n</blockquote>\n<p>Plato's Perfect Year is the moment when the Sun, Moon, and five visible planets all return at once to their starting positions — a planetary-conjunction cycle, not a precessional one. Plato gives it no length, and could not have meant precession by it: the phenomenon would not be identified for another two centuries.<sup class=\"footnote\" data-footnote-id=\"1\">[1]</sup>\n The <em>Timaeus</em> nonetheless fixed the shape of the idea for the Western tradition — time as the ordered motion of the heavens, governed by one master period — and the Latin <strong>Magnus Annus</strong> carried it forward through Cicero, Censorinus, and the medieval schools.</p>\n<p>After Hipparchus, the two ideas merged.
