"title": "Jean Sendy",
"description": "Jean Sendy (born Dimitri Abelson; Petrograd, 16 November 1910 – Coulommiers, 24 April 1978) was a Russian-born French author and translator whose books of 1963–1975 constitute the first finished statement of the literal plural-Elohim reading of the Hebrew Bible — the position that the biblical text, taken at the letter, relates the sojourn on Earth of a plurality of physical, mortal beings called the Elohim, published five years before Erich von Däniken made the general idea a commonplace and eleven years before the Raëlian canon of 1974. A child of the Russian revolution carried through exile to New York and finally Paris, photographed in the 1930s avant-garde by Wols wearing a monocle, naturalized French in 1938, and surfacing after the war as London correspondent for the Resistance-founded Parisien libéré, Sendy spent his working life in the engine room of French publishing — translator of Raymond Chandler, James Hadley Chase, and Fredric Brown, subtitler of The Graduate — while building, from Les cahiers de cours de Moïse (1963) through La lune, clé de la Bible (1968), Ces dieux qui firent le ciel et la terre (1969), L'Ère du Verseau (1970), and Les temps messianiques (1975), a system that read Genesis as the log of a cosmonaut recolonization of a ruined Ice Age Earth, its 'days' as precessional epochs of 2,160 years, Eden as a biological installation, the Flood as a decommissioning, and Babel as unauthorized rocketry. He is unique in the entire reinterpretive tradition for having staked the reading on a falsifiable prediction with a deadline — traces of the Elohim's lunar staging base would be found within a year of the first Moon landing, and if not, 'my hypothesis is to be held false' — a wager Apollo settled against him and whose loss he faced with a dignity his imitators rarely acknowledge. The Wheel of Heaven corpus registers Sendy as its principal pre-Raëlian methodological inheritance: his five conditions of coherence and his Schliemann-Homer reading principle anchor the corpus's hermeneutic, his precessional world-ages supply the architecture the project is named for, and his register — 'I bring no gospel, I propose a hypothesis' — is the corpus's own. Because he wrote a decade before the canon, the convergence between his text-derived system and the 1974 testimony cuts both ways, and the corpus states the symmetry openly while marking the structural divergences — recolonization rather than creation, Yahweh as immaterial Principle rather than Council president, an inheritance to excavate rather than a return to host — that make Sendy a parallel witness rather than a rough draft.",

    "body_html": "
Jean Sendy (1910–1978) was a Russian-born French author and\ntranslator who published, between 1963 and 1975, the first sustained\nstatement of the reading this project is built on: that the Hebrew\nBible, taken at the letter, relates the sojourn on Earth of a\nplurality of physical, mortal beings called the\nElohim. He published it five years before Erich von\nDäniken made the general idea a global commonplace, eleven years\nbefore the Raëlian canon of 1974, and roughly half a century before\nMauro Biglino and Paul Wallis re-derived the\nreading from the Hebrew text in Italy and Australia. Within the\nlineage the corpus files under neo-euhemerism,\nSendy is the earliest finished voice — and, in one respect, still the\nmost disciplined: he is the only author in the tradition's history to\nhave staked his entire reading on a falsifiable prediction, in print,\nwith a deadline, and to have accepted in advance what its failure\nwould mean.
\n
Because Sendy wrote a decade before the canon, his position in the\ncorpus's reference apparatus differs from that of the later\nfellow-travelers. With Wallis, independence runs forward: an author\nwho never read the Raëlian material converged on its load-bearing\njoints from the text alone, which is what makes the convergence\nevidential. With Sendy the same logic runs in reverse, and the corpus\nstates it openly rather than around it: his system was on the shelves\nof France for eleven years before the 1974 message, the young Claude\nVorilhon had in all likelihood read him, and the question of what the\ncanon owes his books is a real one, treated below without polemic.\nWhat the record supports on either reading of that question is that\nSendy worked his system out from the Hebrew text and the exact\nsciences, with no claimed help from anyone — a parallel witness, not\na rough draft. The full-length study is the Explainer The Man Who\nBet the Bible on the\nMoon; this entry\ngives the biographical and bibliographical record.
\n
Life
\n
Sendy was born Dimitri Abelson in Petrograd on 16 November 1910, to a\nJewish family from Kaunas. The revolution carried the family through\nFinland and Norway to New York harbor — the Ellis Island registers of\nMay 1919 land the eight-year-old Dimitri off a liner from Kristiania —\nand finally to Paris. The 1930s photographs by Wols show a young man\nof the avant-garde with slicked-back hair, a patterned necktie, and a\nmonocle; the pseudonym he later adopted may nod to the Polish\nalchemist Michael Sendivogius. He was naturalized French in 1938 as a\n\"journalist,\" and after the war he surfaces filing from London for\nthe Resistance-founded Parisien libéré.
\n
The career that followed ran through the engine room of French\npublishing: translator of Raymond Chandler, James Hadley Chase, and\nPeter Cheyney for the crime imprints, of Fredric Brown's science\nfiction, of documents on the Katyn massacre and the German-Soviet\npact; subtitler of The Graduate. A friend who visited his flat\nfound it nearly empty except for a professional woodworking machine\non which Sendy was building his own dining table. He described\nhimself as an honnête homme in the seventeenth-century sense — the\ncultivated gentleman whose ambition, in his own formulation, \"is not\nto know everything about everything, but to reduce the number of his\nwrong ideas to a minimum.\" The sentence is on his gravestone. He died\nat Coulommiers on 24 April 1978, three years before the first Space\nShuttle flew.
\n
The books and the thesis
\n
The system arrives essentially complete in Les cahiers de cours de\nMoïse — \"Moses' Course Notebooks\" — published by Julliard in\nFebruary 1963 from a manuscript dated 1962. The title states the\nthesis: the Torah is not divine dictation but a notebook, the\ncourse notes of a teaching that predates Moses, who recovered and\ncodified it. The teachers are \"Theosites\" from a planet Theos in\n1963, les Célestes and les Venus-du-ciel — \"the\nCome-from-the-sky\" — from 1968, Galaxiens by 1970; under every\ncoinage sits the Hebrew plural Elohim. The sequence that followed —\nLes dieux nous sont nés (1966), La lune, clé de la Bible (1968),\nCes dieux qui firent le ciel et la terre (1969), Nous autres, gens\ndu Moyen Âge (1969), L'Ère du Verseau (1970), and the late Les\ntemps messianiques (1975) — develops one hypothesis \"from book to\nbook,\" as he put it. Three titles reached English through Berkley in\nNew York, all translated by Lowell Bair: Those Gods Who Made Heaven\nand Earth (1972), The Coming of the Gods (1973), and The Moon:\nOutpost of the Gods (1975).
\n
On Sendy's reading, Genesis is the log of a\nrecolonization. Around twenty-one millennia before our era, with\nEarth wrapped in the cloud cover of the last glacial maximum — the\ntohu-bohu of Genesis 1:2 — a small expedition of cosmonauts arrived\nat a drowned and lightless world and began a six-phase public-works\nprogram that he reads off the days of the creation week: dispersal of\nthe clouds, management of the waters, drainage and revegetation, the\nre-mapping of the sky, the restocking of seas and land, and the\ntaking in hand of the planet's surviving bipeds. Each \"day\"\ncorresponds to a precessional epoch — one twelfth of the\nGreat Year, 2,160 years per sign — which makes the\nbiblical chronology an astronomical one and the\nprecession of the equinoxes the clock of the whole\naccount. Eden is the walled biological installation of\nthe sixth phase, where staff with \"all the time in the world\" breed a\nmanagerial elite from indigenous stock and enforce an access policy\non knowledge; the serpent is the leak. The\nFlood is the decommissioning of the installations\nat departure, with Noah's tebah — a word that names a sealed\ncontainer, never a ship — as the capsule of \"seeds of life\" that\nrides it out. The tower of Babel is a\npost-departure heresy: initiates' descendants attempting to reach the\ndeparted teachers prematurely, with launch infrastructure — for, as\nSendy argued, nobody who has not seen an industrial launch site\nconceives the necessity of a tower \"whose head reaches the\nheavens.\"
\n
Two disciplines set Sendy apart from every telling that came after.\nThe first is his claim hygiene. In block capitals in Ces dieux: he\nhas NEVER affirmed that cosmonauts arrived; he AFFIRMS that the\nbiblical text, taken at the letter, relates that; he THINKS that\nGenesis reflects a historical truth. Affirmed, argued, believed —\nthree registers kept separate on the page, an ancestor of the\nclaim-type discipline this corpus practices by rule. He told readers\nto check him against nothing but the Hebrew or the\nDhorme translation, the one French\nBible that leaves Iahvé Elohim standing. The second is the reading\nprinciple stated in 1969: read the Bible \"comme Schliemann lisait\nHomère\" — as Schliemann read Homer, a document that means what it\nsays, all of what it says, and nothing more than what it says. The\ncorpus catalogs that principle, and its later independent\nre-derivation, under the Biglino Method.
\n
Beneath the space-age surface ran two theses that were entirely his\nown. The first is the medieval postulate, the argument of Nous\nautres, gens du Moyen Âge: that on the one question that matters,\npre-Renaissance exegesis stood closer to the text's real meaning than\nRenaissance and Enlightenment humanism ever did — that humanity is\nnot owner of the planet but concessionaire, trustee of a grant from\ngrantors who left and promised to be findable again. He dedicated\nL'Ère du Verseau to the memory of Giordano Bruno, burned in 1600\n\"because these medieval ideas... displeased the humanists of the\nRenaissance.\" The second is the Kabbalah, engaged not through\noccultist compilations but through La Cabale of Alexandre Safran,\nChief Rabbi of Geneva, whose testimony that the Tradition \"surpasses\nthe Sinai revelation in antiquity\" — and whose sentence \"man will\nrenew the acts related at the beginning of Genesis\" — Sendy read as\nthe custodians' own confirmation that the teaching is older than its\ncodifier, and as a program now underway. Safran agreed to chair\nSendy's 1969 Geneva lecture; each man borrowed the other's facts and\ndeclined the other's frame. The corpus's entry on\nthe Tradition descends directly from this seam,\nand its Kabbalah entry works the same material from\nthe canon's side.
\n
The Moon wager
\n
What makes Sendy unique in this literature — unique, as far as the\ncorpus can determine, in the history of religious reinterpretation —\nis the move he made in 1968. If the Celestials were physically \"in\nour image,\" their seven-millennium operation on Earth needed a\nstaging base, and celestial mechanics dictates the Moon. Its subsoil\nshould therefore still hold traces — \"un Orly cosmonautique,\" a\ncosmonautical Orly. In La lune, clé de la Bible he published the\npositive case — \"a single pottery shard would suffice... to validate\nthe totality of the biblical text that allowed me to predict, by\ntheory, the discovery\" — and then wrote the negative case with equal\ncare: if no trace of cosmonauts is found on the Moon, \"the overall\ncoherence I propose will be refuted.\" In Nous autres, signed to\npress in December 1968, he formalized the protocol and set the\ndeadline: \"En 1970, si rien de tel n'est retrouvé, mon hypothèse\nsera à tenir pour fausse\" — in 1970, if nothing of the kind is\nfound, my hypothesis is to be held false. A hypothesis that leaves\nits author branches to grab when refuted, he added, \"is not a\nhypothesis but a charlatan's enterprise.\" In L'Ère du Verseau he\nwent further and printed coordinates, seizing on a provisional\nnegative gravity anomaly in the early JPL mascon data: 56°N 75°W.
\n
Apollo settled the wager. Six landings returned basalt and breccia\nand no shard; the lunar anomalies he had leaned on dissolved, over\nthe following decades, into tidal locking, the giant-impact origin,\nand better gravimetry. By the letter of his own charlatan-clause the\nlunar ark, as formulated, stands refuted — the plain reading of the\nrecord, and the one he would have demanded be written. His own\nconduct afterward sits between concession and relapse: the 1975 book\nquietly relocates the target to a subsurface cavity awaiting the\nSpace Shuttle, which his own protocol must count as a branch grabbed;\nbut he never denied the miss, never re-dated the prophecy, founded\nnothing, monetized nothing, and went on publicly refuting\nUFO-contactee claims at the height of the von Däniken tide. He had\nalso printed his critics inside the wager book itself — the errata of\nLa lune thank Leroi-Gourhan for correcting his Lascaux dating,\nSchatzman for redoing his energy calculations, and quote the\ngeneticist Cuny's verdict that his interbreeding scenario had \"no\nmore than a 0.01% chance of being right.\" It was Schatzman, a\nmilitant rationalist, who wrote the introductions for Sendy's 1970\nAmerican tour, where he put his questions to Freeman Dyson at\nPrinceton and Carl Sagan at Cornell. The corpus reads the wager, won\nor lost, as the tradition's conscience: a standing challenge to stake\nany part of the framework on a checkable consequence.
\n
The conditions of coherence
\n
Sendy's methodological legacy is codified in the corpus under\nSendy's Conditions of Coherence\n— the five preconditions he listed in chapter 18 of L'Ère du\nVerseau for the biblical text to appear \"with the relief and\ncoherence of a hologram\": familiarity with the Bible itself;\nfamiliarity with astronautics within the framework of contemporary\nphysics; elementary but recent knowledge of biology, prehistory,\nhistory, and evolution; refusal of any \"explanation by the\nInexplicable\"; and the implicit fifth, acceptance of a universe\nintelligible to human reason. That entry treats the framework in\nfull, including its pairing with the Biglino Method — Sendy supplies\nwhat the reader must have, Biglino what the reader must do — and\nthe medievalist-rationalist positioning of the fourth condition,\nwhich rejects the supernatural not as Enlightenment naturalism but as\nthe recovery of a pre-Plotinian reading in which the Tradition is\ntransmitted knowledge from physical visitors. This entry does not\nduplicate that treatment; the biographical point is only that the\nconditions were the late formalization of habits Sendy had practiced\nfrom the first book onward.
\n
Relation to the Wheel of Heaven framework
\n
The convergences between Sendy's system and the canon are extensive\nand specific. The plural Elohim read as concrete physical beings —\nhis Venus-du-ciel and the canon's gloss \"those come from the sky\"\nare nearly the same French words. Eden as a managed biological\ninstallation, with the forbidden tree as access policy rather than\nmorality, and nothing falling — a protocol breached. The Flood as a\ndeliberate reset with genetic stock preserved in a sealed container;\nBabel as an interrupted reach for the creators' sky. History\nstructured by the precessional world ages, with the\ndecisive threshold at the turn into Aquarius — Sendy's 1950, by the\nvernal point, sits five years from the canon's 1945, dated by\nHiroshima: two entirely different roads to almost the same door. And\ndeepest, the shared eschatology of graduation: Sendy's Aquarius is\nthe age in which men \"equal themselves to the gods\" and in time seed\nother worlds as a new race of Elohim — the relay the corpus files\nunder the cosmic chain.
\n
The divergences are equally structural, and they are what make Sendy\na parallel witness rather than a rough draft. First, creation. The\ncanon's Elohim create life on Earth — all of it, from alga to man —\nin their laboratories; Sendy's Celestials create nothing of the\nkind. His bipeds are indigenous, evolved on Earth by the standard\naccount; his six days are a restoration of a ruined biosphere, and\nhis Eden accelerates and selects existing stock. On this axis Sendy\nstands farther from the canon than Biglino or Wallis, both of whom\nkeep the fabrication of the Adam. Second, Yahweh. The canon seats\nYahweh as president of the\nCouncil of the Eternals; Sendy removes\nhim from the roster of persons altogether — his Iahvé is the\nunpronounceable Principle, \"as immaterial as a mathematical\nprinciple,\" the Law of laws that the Elohim themselves obey — and he\nflagged the area himself: \"Yahweh is the weak point of my thesis.\"\nThird, the return. Sendy expected none: \"the cosmonauts, in all\nlikelihood, will not come back,\" leaving humanity an inheritance to\nexcavate and, beyond it, contact between equals. The canon's entire\npractical program is the opposite — the\nGreat Return as diplomacy, with an\nembassy to build and hosts rather than excavators.
\n
Then there is the question of 1974. Sendy read, or heard enough of,\nthe young Claude Vorilhon's first book, and left one sentence about\nit in Les temps messianiques: the \"amiable humbug of the good young\nman who, having read my books, decided to call 'the Elohim' those\nextraterrestrials to whom he attributes the platitudes he delivers in\nlectures.\" The plagiarism dossier built on that resemblance —\ncatalogued motif by motif by ex-Raëlians and at book length by Maryse\nPéloquin, answered point by point from the Raëlian side, recorded\nwithout adjudication by academic observers from Palmer to Bigliardi —\nis summarized in the Explainer. The corpus reads the Raëlian texts as\ncanon, so its own position is stated with complete transparency, and\nit can be, because the logic is symmetrical. If the 1973 encounter\ndid not happen, the message is a condensation of Sendy — his\nhypothesis with the falsifiability clause amputated and a testimony\ngrafted on. If it did happen, then the Elohim chose a France in which\nSendy had spent eleven years teaching the reading public how to parse\nthe words \"we are men like you,\" and left in print an independent\ncorroboration arrived at by scholarship alone — which is how French\nRaëlians in fact used his books. On either branch Sendy's stature\nrises: he is either the true author of the century's most\nconsequential reinterpretation of Genesis, or the man who worked out\nfrom the text, unaided, most of what the canon says a witness was\nlater told. The one verdict the record cannot support is the\ndismissive one — scooped precursor, mere source — that both camps\nhave filed him under.
\n
Legacy
\n
In the lineage the corpus calls neo-euhemerist, Sendy's priority is\nsimply chronological fact: the Cahiers precede Chariots of the\nGods? by five years, Sitchin's The 12th Planet by thirteen, and\nthe entire text-led branch of the tradition descends from — or, more\nprecisely, re-derives — positions he stated first. Biglino, who\nreached the same Schliemann principle through seventeen years of\nprofessional Hebrew translation, has denied having read Sendy; Wallis\ncites him nowhere; the corpus treats both re-derivations as\nmethodological convergence rather than influence, and notes that the\nconvergence itself is evidence — two later readers, working the same\ntext independently, arriving at the structure Sendy published in\n1963–1969 suggests the text produces the method when engaged closely.\nHis contemporary reception was thin and largely adversarial: the\nrationalist ufologists reviewed him skeptically in his lifetime,\nmainstream scholarship ignored him, and the one substantial academic\nstudy — Stefano Bigliardi's \"A Gentleman's Joyous Esotericism\"\n(2017) — arrived four decades after his death. Only three of the\nseven books were ever translated, which left his two most original\ncontributions, the medieval thesis and the Safran engagement,\ninvisible to Anglophone readers.
\n
Within this corpus his standing is different in kind from any other\nauthor's. The conditions of coherence and the Schliemann principle\nanchor the methodology entries; the medieval postulate charters the\ncorpus's stance that the supernatural is a late corruption of a\nconcrete record; the precessional spine — Genesis days as world\nages, the pre-Hipparchan antiquity of precessional knowledge, the\nalliance with Hamlet's Mill — is structural in the\nWheel of Heaven framing itself, which takes\nits name from the object Sendy spent his life pointing at.
