They\ncreate life \"on an infinity of planets\"\n(<a class=\"libref\" href=\"&#x2F;library&#x2F;lets-welcome-the-extraterrestrials&#x2F;#c2p105\">LWTE 2:105</a>\n),\nand the outcomes are filtered:</p>\n<blockquote class=\"library-quote\" data-source=\"&#x2F;library&#x2F;extraterrestrials-took-me-to-their-planet&#x2F;#c2p25\">This is, in a way, a natural selection, on the cosmic scale, of the species\ncapable of escaping their planet. The others self-destruct as soon as their\nscientific and technological level permits them to invent weapons powerful enough\nfor that.</blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"The_Wheel_of_Heaven_reading\">The Wheel of Heaven reading</h2>\n<p>Read as a claim about method, the canon resolves the Gaia objection. Doolittle and\nDawkins said the Earth cannot be an organism because no population of planets\nundergoes differential reproduction. The canon answers that there <em>is</em> such a\npopulation — the humanities seeded across the cosmos — and that it <em>does</em> undergo\ndifferential reproduction, filtered by a selection pressure stated with total\nspecificity: the capacity to master aggression before acquiring the power to\nself-destruct. The worlds that pass propagate onward along the\n\n<a class=\"wikilink\" href=\"/wiki/cosmic-chain/\">Cosmic Chain</a>\n; the worlds that fail are\nremoved from the population by their own hand. That is not a metaphor for\nselection but a description of it, with a substrate (planetary humanities), a\nvariation (their differing wisdom-to-power ratios), and a filter (the maturity\ntest). The corpus reading is that <strong>macrobiology is possible, on the canon's\nterms, precisely where the Gaia hypothesis was impossible</strong> — because the canon\nsupplies the one resource biology could never find for itself: a breeder,\nstanding outside the specimen, with a population of specimens and a record of how\nthey run.
